FBS Overview: A Unique Family of Dry Cabin, Diesel Electric, Speedboat Submarine Systems

The FBS is a long-range speedboat and diesel-electric (dry cabin) submarine that uses a practical combination of time tested systems and engineering that is arranged to produce a craft that, simply put, makes more things possible, all in one platform. As such, it provides instant and sustainable subsea access when you need it, simply by launching it from your dock, beach, or estuary.

The importance of these characteristics can be easy to overlook. So, consider each on its own merit while then considering the synergistic impact when combined with the other features listed.

Practical Design Features:

  • Small Size: A critically important characteristic. It not only allows for missions to be performed in extremely shallow waters (right up to the waters edge) totally submerged, but also makes subsea capabilities affordable for smaller governments.

  • Dry (Pressure Boundary) Cabin(s): This keeps the crew and divers dry (to depths of 500ft.) which allows for new, persistent subsea missions to be performed. The pressure inside the cabin doesn’t change regardless of depth.

  • Onboard Dive Systems Recharge Capabilities: This feature allows the FBS to stay on-mission for prolonged periods, making it capable of repeated dives and long submerged distances.

  • 3,000 lbs. Variable Equipment/Cargo Capacity: This feature is possible due to the hyper-ballasting (or hyper-buoyancy) aspects of the FBS design.

  • Large Fuel Load: Allows for long range and repeated dive systems recharging.

  • The Sea Frame / Modularity: The functional base of the entire vessel. It allows the FBS to employ various cabin configurations and electronics packages while also rigidly securing the engines, ballast tanks, battery modules and the dry chamber. It can also be upgraded for a wide variety of mission needs or future campaigns as technology and mission profiles are developed.

  • Hyper-Buoyancy (or hyper-ballasting): A key feature that allows the FBS to operate as both a speedboat and submarine. It also provides advanced safety characteristics and heavy-lift capabilities.

  • Safety: In addition to the passive safety characteristics captured through hyper-buoyancy, additional levels of safety and reliability are built into the FBS. The entire system uses time-tested Commercial Off the Shelf components, proven marine engineering and manufacturing techniques, as directed under the guidance and certification processes of the International Association of Certification Societies (IACS).
